Reading a Density Map
Every client leaves with a printed port map. Here's what each line on it actually means.
A density map printout looks simple — a short list of ports with numbers next to each one — but each figure is doing a specific job, and reading them together tells you more than any single line on its own.
Port Position and Label
Each port gets labeled by its physical location: heel, toe, front, back, or a compound label like "low-back" on hybrids. This isn't standardized across every manufacturer, so we translate manufacturer-specific naming into a consistent label set that reads the same regardless of which brand's head you're holding.
Installed Weight vs. Port Capacity
Two numbers appear for every port: what's currently installed, and the maximum the port can physically hold. The gap between those two numbers is your remaining room to add mass in that position without changing anything else — useful to know before ordering a heavier slug that might not actually fit.
Total Head Mass and Swingweight
Below the individual ports, the map totals every port's weight alongside head shell weight to show total head mass, and calculates resulting swingweight against your specific shaft and grip combination. This is the number that connects port decisions back to how the finished club actually swings, not just how the head alone balances on a scale.
Read the individual ports for placement, then read the total line for whether the whole club still swings the weight you want.
Torque Log
A final section records the torque value each port screw was tightened to, using a calibrated wrench, along with the date of service. If a screw ever needs to come back out for another adjustment, this line tells whoever's doing it exactly what to put it back to.
The Takeaway
A density map is meant to be usable later, not just understood in the moment. Keep it — it's the reference point for any future adjustment, whether you bring it back to us or to another shop entirely.
