Most aftermarket and factory port weight sets ship in 2-gram steps, commonly running from 2 grams up through 16 grams, occasionally higher for heads built around a single large port. Picking between a 2-gram nudge and an 8-gram swing isn't just about how much total mass you want to add — it changes how gradually or abruptly the head's behavior shifts.

Small Steps for Fine-Tuning

A 2- or 4-gram adjustment is the right tool once you're close to a working setup and chasing a small correction — tightening dispersion by a yard or two, or nudging launch a half-degree without disturbing everything else you've already dialed in.

Larger Steps for Real Category Changes

An 8- to 12-gram swing is closer to what it takes to meaningfully shift CG bias from one region of the head to another, which is why baseline testing usually starts with bigger increments before narrowing down. Starting with 2-gram steps across a wide search area wastes session time confirming what a single larger test would have shown immediately.

Start wide to find the right neighborhood, then narrow with small steps once you're already close — not the other way around.

Why Increment Size Also Affects Total Mass

Every increment added to one port either comes from removing weight elsewhere or adds to overall head mass, which shifts swingweight. A 12-gram jump without an offsetting reduction somewhere else can push swingweight outside a comfortable range even if the CG placement itself tested well on the monitor — which is why total mass gets tracked alongside every port test, not just the CG shift alone.

Increment size isn't arbitrary. Wide steps find the right region of the head fast; narrow steps refine it once you're close. Both get used in the same session, in that order.
