Front Port vs. Back Port

The single biggest lever in a multi-port driver head, and the trade-off nobody tells you comes with it.

Front-to-back weight placement is usually the largest single mass movement available in a multi-port driver, and it produces the most noticeable change on a launch monitor of any single adjustment. It's also the one with the clearest trade-off attached.

What Moving Weight Back Does

Shifting mass toward the rear port pulls the CG deeper into the head, which raises launch angle and lowers spin for a given loft. It also generally increases moment of inertia, since the mass sits further from the head's rotational axis, which resists twisting on off-center strikes and tends to tighten dispersion.

What Moving Weight Forward Does

Shifting mass toward the front port pulls the CG closer to the face, which lowers both launch and spin further than a back-weighted setup can reach. The trade-off is a smaller effective sweet spot and less forgiveness on strikes away from center — a lever suited to higher-speed players who already strike the ball consistently and are specifically fighting excess spin.

Back-weighted heads forgive more; front-weighted heads launch lower and spin less. Almost nobody needs the extreme end of either lever.

Why It's Rarely All-or-Nothing

Most fittings land somewhere between the two extremes rather than maxing out either port, because full forward weight sacrifices more forgiveness than most players' strike consistency can absorb, and full rear weight can leave spin too high for players who already launch adequately. Testing both directions against a recorded baseline is how the actual sweet spot between the two gets found, rather than assumed from a spec sheet.
