Density Mapping Explained

A term that gets used loosely in golf marketing, but describes something specific and measurable once you actually open a head up.

A density map is a record of exactly how much tungsten or steel mass sits in each individual port of a clubhead, at what position, at the moment a fitting session ends. It's not the same thing as a manufacturer's published "center of gravity" figure, which describes a single calculated point rather than the actual distribution of physical weight that produced it.

Why One Number Isn't Enough

A published CG coordinate can be reached by an almost unlimited number of different port arrangements — light front, heavy back; balanced heel-toe with a neutral front-back split; or something asymmetric entirely. Two heads with an identical stated CG location can behave differently off the face because the actual mass distribution creating that average point isn't identical.

The CG number tells you where the balance point landed. The density map tells you how it got there — and how much room is left to move it further.

What Gets Recorded

A complete map lists every port position present in the head, the weight currently occupying it in grams, the port's stated maximum capacity, and any spacer or filler material taking up unused capacity. For heads with a single fixed port, the map is simpler but still worth recording, since it establishes a baseline for future comparison.

Why It Changes the Fitting Conversation

Once you can see the actual distribution, questions become concrete instead of theoretical. Instead of asking "should this head launch higher," the question becomes "does moving four grams from the front port to the back port get us there, and is there enough unused capacity to do it." That's a question with a measurable answer, tested on the spot rather than guessed at.

A density map is a physical inventory, not a marketing figure. It's what makes port-based fitting a repeatable, documented process instead of a one-time swap you'd have to guess your way back to if you ever wanted to undo it.
